Gold again?! And Silver too?

I just found out that I won Gold for the third year in a row from the Richmond Illustrators Club's 2009 Annual. The crazy thing is that I also won the Silver award which I didn't know was allowed! The very awesome illustration master Marshall Arisman was the sole Juror this year and supposedly really liked my work (or maybe I bribed him? You'll find out ten years after I'm dead). The winning pieces were Muqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Army and Jan's Cats.

Thanks RIC and Marshall Arisman!!!

Spread the Word

Here are two new ones I did for Santa Barbara Independent and for BusinessWeek. The first Illustration was sort of difficult in concept since it's about religion in schools, but I was not allowed to use any kind of iconography (i.e. crosses, bibles, churches, etc.). The client decided to go with the sketch that showed how religious organizations are trying to get young kids into their after school groups through peer pressure.

The second illo was a quick one in that I had 24 hours from sketches to finish. Luckily it was conceptually simple and the client just wanted a few narratives. The finished piece shows several ways that companies are are creating incentives for those who have been laid off. What's shown below is a very savvy man who is taking up these businesses on their offers of refunds for recently purchased items and clinics not charging for medical bills.

Website Update

I just finished updating my website. I pretty much only touched the illustration section, but I also added images and links to Team 8 Press in the store section. Enjoy!

FUNS WANT Interview

I have a feature interview in the Taiwanese magazine Funs Want Vo. 9. You should check out their very cool website. However unless you can read traditional Chinese you're going to need to use babel fish to translate for you.

Some New Stuff

The top illustration is for the cover of Inland Empire Weekly. The featured article reports that in areas of California the military is conducting routine DUI checkpoints, which is illegal. According to of Posse Comitatus the military isn't supposed to be used to enforce the law domestically except for under martial law.

Here's a small portrait for BusinessWeek.

And lastly, I was interviewed by alongside artists, Nathan Kanne and Chanae Owens in regards to the "Cost of Living" show at Gallery 5 (opens this Friday). Our interviewer, Tim Bowring asks us questions about the show, the economy and what it means to be an artist in these strange times. The radio show airs Friday, March 6th at 12:30 pm on WRIR 97.3 (Richmond's local independent radio station)

Also, here's an illustration for Beer Advocate Magazine. It's of Bill Brand, a late, great beer journalist.

Feeling Desperate?

Here's some recent illos I did for Time Out Chicago for their Valentine's Day singles issue. The cast of characters are a bunch sleeze balls that you may just decide to subject yourself to this Valentine's Day if desperation outweighs good judgment. The greatest part about working on this was that I based all the drawings on people I know.
