I did this huge piece as a free downloadable wallpaper for theartfuls.com, an illustration-centric website. I also will have an interview and a gallery on view there. I'm not sure when all of it will be up, but I'm sure I'll post a link when it does.

I actually had no plan when I started this piece. First I was going to tile a bunch of these heads with objects around them kind of like they were floating in space. But I unfortunately liked the composition in which I drew them, so I made a ton more work for myself by drawing an intricate scene surrounding all these busts. I know I missed some very deserving jerks in this illustration, but hopefully I'll do a sequel piece.

On a positive note, recently King Abdullah finally granted women the right to vote and run in municipal elections starting in 2015.

Behance alphabet B!

I was invited by Mark Miller of Dark Igloo to participate in creating an alphabet for Behance. Each artist got to pick a letter and being that my initials are BBB, my choice was obvious. I decided to style my letter around the ancient diety Ba'al, who is more commonly known today as a demon and polyonymously as The Lord of the Flies, Beelzebub, and even Satan himself.

My sister, Jordan, also did one (J of course. Are the Bruners a bit narcissistic?). As she put it, "It's a Josephine Baker look-a-like stepping on a Jack Russel Terrier dressed as Thomas Jefferson, duh..."

I can't wait to see the completed alphabet. It should be great!

The Molly Maguires

I got to do a piece for The Progressive's 2012 calendar which is themed around forgotten American history. My little bit of forgotten history involves the Molly Maguires who were coal mining Irish immigrants living in 19th century Pennsylvania. They unionized, and due to poor working conditions, low pay, and long hours they decided to strike. Of course their corporate bosses/enemies didn't like this, and to make a long story short, 20 of the union leaders were wrongly convicted of murder and later executed. I've been working on a pretty exciting project for the last month or so. I'm going to be creating the art for the movie, "Neighbors," which is about a middle aged graphic novelist who has hit a creative wall and how that affects his relationships with the people around him. I just finished this guy for a new literary publication called Gigantic Magazine. The theme of the the issue was "indoors," so I took a literal take on this and drew my old room/studio based on a few photos I had. Afghan Women

Here's a new one for The Progressive that accompanies a piece about the plight of women in Afghanistan and how their lives are either controlled by the Taliban or the current lawless behavior of men in their communities. It was only supposed to be in Black and white, but I went ahead and did a color version just for fun. Also I included the sketches which is something I usually don't do, but I liked the ideas for this job. Maybe more to come.

Also in other news, I moved back to Brooklyn! Happy New Year everyone!

Hi all! Here's a new one for the upcoming Time Out Chicago Sex Issue. The article I illustrated was a collection of submitted stories about many awkward and unfortunate ending sexual encounters. The one I chose to illustrate was about a guy queasy, yet lustful, guy who was persistent in making out despite having just vomited. Yeah it's silly, but it was a lot of fun to work on, and it ended up looking sort of psychedelic in the end.

And, oh yes, thank you Cody for having a similar story in your arsenal, and inspiring me to steal photos of you on Facebook to use as reference. There's a slight likeness but I don't think anyone will recognize you on the street.

The Bizarre Market

I just finished making the poster for Richmond's Fall Bizarre Market. What's the Bizarre Market you ask. Well, its a recurring event that consists of local artists, crafts people, and others selling all kinds of stuff like baked goods, jewelry, greeting cards, and anything else you can think of.

The first Fall market is on Saturday, Sept. 18th at The Visual Arts Center (1812 W. Main St.) from 12-6pm. I think I'm supposed to be doing portraits or something like that for it. Ten percent of all proceeds benefit SOHO (a Space of Her Own), a mentoring program for girls from Gilpin Court sponsored by the Visual Arts Center of Richmond. For more info click here.

As far as the poster goes- I hand made two type faces for it, which is something I've been playing around a lot with lately. I think I'll make a post soon featuring all the type faces I've been messing with. Overall it was a ton of fun to work on and I'm looking forward to seeing it hanging around town.

If you've never heard of him you should check the guy out. He breaks with his party all the time depending on what he thinks is constitutionally right.

About to hit the fan!

I probably should have posted this earlier, but I didn't, so everybody just relax. Anyway, Brick Weekly, a Richmond area news/culture/events publication put out a piece entitled We Knew Them When: Ten Richmond Artists about to hit the F*%king Fan and I was honored that the writer, Byrd Cox, decided to include me in the mix. Unfortunately it was also Brick's farewell issue, so I'll have to move onto other publications for such flattery. Also if you're trying to find an issue, it came out last week or maybe before that so it might be a little difficult. I do however have a small stack of them at my apartment if you're really interested. Below are some images of the article:

Big Boi and Yoko Ono

So, I really like Outkast, therefore I was thrilled when Time Out: Chicago contacted me to do a full page illustration of Big Boi for the upcoming Pitchfork Festival. In the tradition of hip hop stars Big Boi is quite polyonymous, and that's what Time Out wanted to see. His aliases are Sir Lucious Left Foot, Daddy Fat Stacks, Hot Tub Tony, Billy Ocean, and Francis the Savannah Chittlin' Pimp. I had a lot of fun with this one. Hopefully some more hip hop jobs are on the way.

In addition Time Out wanted me to do a quarter page illo about a previous Pitchfork festival incident. Yoko Ono performed in 2007 and was being somewhat difficult in the rehearsal. A dust storm formed in the adjacent baseball field and the Pitchfork team had to soak the field with bottles of water so she would perform.

Check back soon. Hopefully I'll be able to post something related to the long-term project that I've been working on. Thanks!

Green Students at Dartmouth

It's been awhile since my last post, but a lot has been happening regardless. I went to Costa Rica for a week. Unfortunately my hard drive crashed, but I was able save everything except my newly designed website that I had been working on for the past month>:( , so I'm not sure when the newly designed site will be up and functioning. Also most importantly I've been working on a long term project that I'll keep everyone updated about once the time is right (can't disclose details at this point).

Here's a new one I did about a month ago fom The Progressive about students at Dartmouth College trying to make their campus more green.

Hair'em Scare'em follow up

Here's an interesting tid bit I just found out. The book, Hair'em Scare'em, that contains some of my work is being carried nationwide by Urban Outfitters (Ironically found at a suburban mall in my town). So go try on some overpriced, ill-fitting jeans, pick up a houndstooth fedora, rock some fluorescent yellow shades, and maybe buy a copy of Hair'em Scare'em.

Anatomy of a Richmond Murder

Hey everyone, I just finished two illos for Richmond Magazine. The story they accompany was a series of noir-esque, first hand events that took place in the familiar setting of Richmond. A body is found on the shore of the James River, the police seem disinterested, so the writer takes upon himself to find out what happened. Interesting stuff.

I based the image off of Saul Bass's classic poster for "Anatomy of a Murder." I realize he (when he was alive) got very testy when his style was emulated, especially in the case of the poster for "Clockers." So I think to myself, "Maybe I can join the ranks of Saul Bass rip off artists!" I don't know, but I feel like his style has become so iconic that it's entered into our visual lexicon, so I had no qualms borrowing imagery. I separated the hand from the arm b/c allegedly the body was found wearing only one glove on his right hand which is important later on in the story.

Also the body isn't centered b/c the the left hand side falls across the gutter of the magazine.

The second image is a spot that depicts the protagonist discovering evidence and the place of the crime.

I just did a portrait of Meredith Whitney for Globe and Mail's Report on Business, a Canadian publication. Think of it like the USA Today of Canada. Mrs. Whitney is a stock analyst who regularly appears on TV news speaking her mind about the state of the economy and and the the stock market. She's known for being very outspoken and having a much more dire outlook than many of her colleagues. So I decided to draw her confidently walking through a sea of her peers. Drawing all the little people was a challenge and a lot of fun. I sent them two different versions to choose from.

I just completed thirteen portraits including one for the cover of The Philadelphia City Paper. Since there were so many monumental celebrity deaths in 2009 The City Paper found it only suitable to pay homage to other accomplished people who did not have their names splashed all over the tabloids. I really enjoyed doing the type by hand and drawing the border which is something I do not normally do in my illustrations.

It's been awhile since my last post, but I've been keeping pretty busy this past month so I have a lot to show for it. This first piece, for Stocks and Commodities Magazine, was about the uncertainty and immobility of the stock market of the past year. I love drawing bears and bunches of little people, so naturally this was a lot of to work on.

I especially like working on projects that involve creating images for social issues and/or current political events. This illustration is for the October issue of the Progressive and is about how bad the unemployment issue is in New Orleans right now.

Gold again?! And Silver too?

I just found out that I won Gold for the third year in a row from the Richmond Illustrators Club's 2009 Annual. The crazy thing is that I also won the Silver award which I didn't know was allowed! The very awesome illustration master Marshall Arisman was the sole Juror this year and supposedly really liked my work (or maybe I bribed him? You'll find out ten years after I'm dead). The winning pieces were Muqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Army and Jan's Cats.

Spread the Word

Here are two new ones I did for Santa Barbara Independent and for BusinessWeek. The first Illustration was sort of difficult in concept since it's about religion in schools, but I was not allowed to use any kind of iconography (i.e. crosses, bibles, churches, etc.). The client decided to go with the sketch that showed how religious organizations are trying to get young kids into their after school groups through peer pressure.

The second illo was a quick one in that I had 24 hours from sketches to finish. Luckily it was conceptually simple and the client just wanted a few narratives. The finished piece shows several ways that companies are are creating incentives for those who have been laid off. What's shown below is a very savvy man who is taking up these businesses on their offers of refunds for recently purchased items and clinics not charging for medical bills.

The top illustration is for the cover of Inland Empire Weekly. The featured article reports that in areas of California the military is conducting routine DUI checkpoints, which is illegal. According to of Posse Comitatus the military isn't supposed to be used to enforce the law domestically except for under martial law.

And lastly, I was interviewed by alongside artists, Nathan Kanne and Chanae Owens in regards to the "Cost of Living" show at Gallery 5 (opens this Friday). Our interviewer, Tim Bowring asks us questions about the show, the economy and what it means to be an artist in these strange times. The radio show airs Friday, March 6th at 12:30 pm on WRIR 97.3 (Richmond's local independent radio station)

I finally finished my sculpture which has taken me forever to complete. I was invited to participate in a group show called "The Cost of Living" at Gallery 5 in Richmond, Va which will include a lot of the local talent around these parts. I've been wanting to work three dimensionally for quite some now, and felt that this was a perfect opportunity to experiment. I admit that I'm not the best photographer so hopefully I'll get some better photos up here soon that don't included backgrounds of my messy bedroom. This is totally new territory for me so let me know what you think. Thanks!

The Cost of Living

Lately I've been working on a sculpture for a show coming up at Gallery 5 in Richmond, Va (Opening on Friday, March 6th). The show is centered around the theme of "The Cost of Living," so I chose to create a bunch of little figures working in this unfinished building/giant king. Essentially it's saying the king's wealth is created by the combined labor of the many. I wanted to try something new with media, since I feel like I've been messing around with pen and ink almost exclusively for the last few years. It's been a lot of fun building this thing and I've learned a lot about working with an added dimension. In this image the piece still isn't complete, but I'll post an update once it's finished.

Rural Internet

I just finished another illustration for Plenty Magazine. This illo accompanies an article about how most people in rural areas of the US don't have internet access or if they do it's dial up. And with all that the internet has to offer these days many of these people are left in the dark. But soon many rural areas will get the opportunity to cable internet due the open spaces left by when all TV switches to HD.

With my spare time I redesigned the game based on the boroughs of New York City and east Jersey. (For those unfamiliar with the game the original board and cards are below as well). Also a different variable I added to the game is the bridge blowing card, which one could blow up bridges or tunnels to adjoining territories.

With naming and shaping the territories on the map I apologize in advance to all neighborhoods grossly misrepresented in shape or size or not included at all. But this is a game board not meant to be used as a accurate map of the NYC area, and it would be impossible to include all neighborhoods.

As for the cards, I used the movie, The Warriors, as inspiration. In order from left to right they represent (as from the original game) infantry, cavalry, and artillery. And below is the bridge blowing card and the wild card. Before I carried away and poorly describe all aspects of the game, go to the RISK wiki page for a full explanation the game and its rules.

Art for sale At Rumors Boutique

Apparently I make hipster art. No, just kidding. For I don't use stencils, like graffiti or draw deer and owls, but my work will be for sale on the walls of Rumors Boutique ("injecting the south with style") at 404 N Harrison St., Richmond, VA. If your unfamiliar with Rumors, it's an independent clothing/music/etc. store that also functions as a Venue for live music. It's a pretty interesting place to say in the least. Jan Van Eyck's Cat's

This past weekend I was a groomsman in the wedding of my very good friends, Neal Iwan and Kristen Lowery. It was a ton of fun, I went golfing for the first time, and drank too much Maker's Mark at the reception. But the greatest part of all was making the bride cry for 30 minutes. No, I didn't ream her out for trying to steal my friend from me, and no I did not object to their union by feigning a seizure in the middle of the aisle. What I did do was give them a really good wedding present.

Neal and Kristen have two cats, Charlie and Kitten, who they both adore, so I decided to redo Jan Van Eyck's famous "The Arnolfini Marriage" with their cat's heads switched with the people's in the painting and Neal's with the dog's. Unbeknown to me that painting happened to be Kristen's all time favorite, so when she opened it, my altered version moved her quite a bit.

Apparently, Kitten didn't like it as much they did. Neal reported when they got home, he sat the framed illo on their kitchen counter, and Kitten jumped on it thus knocking it onto the floor, breaking the frame. Oh well... So here's the piece:

I forgot to post that I printed some T-shirts with Team 8 Press a few weeks ago. Each shirt is printed on navy American Apparel T's and there's a variety of men's and women's sizes available. New Stuff

Here are some new illos that I've completed. The first one was for an article in Plenty Magazine about the politics of salmon. It dealt with how politicians block legislation to help save salmon populations and put in measures that might destroy their habitats. I had a great time with the content (of course) this illo, but drawing the the environment around the figures and handling of the color was a lot of fun to play with too.

The second drawing is just another portrait that was intended was promo mailing. It's of Vladamir Putin.

I just finished the second collection of dictator drawings for the Dictator's project. From top left, the portraits are as follows: Benito Mussolini, Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, Haile Selassie, Manuel Noriega, King Fahd, Hideki Tojo, Francisco Franco, Ian Smith, Suharto, Ho Chi Minh, Francois Duvalier, and Pol Pot.

"Freaky Illustration"

The new issue of XFUNS came out this month which contains an eight page feature on me under the theme of "Freaky Illustration." If you haven't heard of XFUNS, it's a really cool bimonthly design/illustration magazine based in Taiwan. Check out their website, but you may to use an online translator, since it's written in Chinese and their English version page doesn't seem to be working. I'm not sure if it's available for sale in US bookstores, but copies can be bought from their website. This issue also features the work of Nicholas Di Genova (who did the cover), Ric Stultz, Dekore, and Kato5 among others. So a few things have happened in the past month or so. First off, I won gold in the Richmond Illustrators Club Second Annual Juried show (Juried by Anita Kunz, Greg Swaringen, and Josh George). Second show, second time I won gold. I have a legacy to protect now. If you're unaware of the Richmond Illustrators Club, check em' out. They're up to some interesting things.

Also, I just finished going the cover for "The Deal Magazine." The idea behind the illo is that Japanese Pharmaceutical companies are taking over the US market, so what better way of showing that than using Godzilla.

Here's what they did with it:

About a week and half ago I did an illo for the cover of Inland Empire Weekly. They wanted an image depicting McCain's changing attitudes towards Bush.
